A-list bloggers and popular websites would have everyone to believe that you need to be everywhere because they seem like they are everywhere.
But here’s the problem.
If you are trying to do everything yourself (or nearly everything), then you know that you have a limited amount of resources. And everything you add means that it requires resources to implement. Which means that if you are tweeting, keeping up with a Facebook Fan Page, perpetually writing articles for your website and guest blogging, and networking to boot, your resources are strained.
You aren’t doing any one thing particularly well. You are just thinly dispersing resources everywhere. Your better option may be to concentrate your resources into just a couple outposts or platforms instead.
But if it works for them….
A-listers and popular websites have demonstrative proof that social marketing works with being everywhere at once. They are constantly tweeted and liked, Plussed, and so on and wear it like a badge of honor.
But the reality is that social networks and being everywhere at once isn’t necessarily what YOU do but what others who do the tweeting and liking do. In other words, they don’t even necessarily need to be involved socially at all. The social icons don’t demonstrate how they actively go about being everywhere by being actively involved; they are just giving their users a way to communicate outwards.
People like Seth Godin illustrate this perfectly. He is everywhere not because of what he does on social networks but because of what others do.
I’m reminded of this every time a client comes to me and requests a Facebook Fan page. Usually, I tell them that I will do it for them but then ask them what it is they are hoping to accomplish by having a fan page. I also mention that it takes a real resource commitment in order for it to work. And focus. You can’t just slap a facebook fan page up there and expect the masses to come out.
Do YOU think you are doing too much with the resources you have?
